Staff report
The Chesterton boys swim and dive team, which sent six athletes to compete at the state meet after finishing second in the sectional, the previous week behind only host Valparaiso, didn’t have anyone advance to the finals.
Diver Luke Hawkins had the highest individual finish of the travel party, 21st, which left him one spot from making the semifinals. All rounds of diving take place Saturday.
The season ended for the five swimmers in Friday night’s preliminaries.
Luke Wheele, the Trojans’ only swimmer to qualify compete at the state meet in individual events, finished 24th in the 100-yard freestyle (47.60) and 26th in the 200 free (1:46.39).
The Trojans’ 200 free relay (Wheele, Aaron Guzzo, Tyler Scalf and Calan Berrier) finished 24th with a 1:29.35. The 400 free relay (Wheele, Greydon Pieroni, Berrier, Guzzo) was 22nd, timed in 3:17.08.
The top eight finishers in each swimming event advanced to the A final. The B final features those who have the 9th through 16th best times in the preliminaries. All points are earned at the A and B finals, so Chesterton did not register any points.
Carmel won the meet with 412.5 points and Fishers was second with 216.
